استقال وزير الدفاع البريطاني جون هيلي الخميس، في خطوة مفاجئة قال، إنها جاءت بسبب عدم التزام رئيس الوزراء كير ستارمر ووزارة المال بتوفير الموارد الكافية للاستثمار في الدفاع.

وكتب هيلي في رسالة استقالته إلى ستارمر "لم تتمكنوا، ولم تُبدِ وزارة الخزانة استعدادا، لتوفير الموارد التي تحتاجها البلاد للدفاع عن نفسها في هذه المرحلة التي تتزايد فيها التهديدات".

وتأتي الاستقالة في وقت أرجأت الحكومة نشر خطة استثمار دفاعية طال انتظارها، تحدد التمويل المخصص للقطاع خلال العقد المقبل، وسط تقارير تفيد بأن المبالغ المرصودة ستكون أقل بكثير من المستوى الذي طلبته وزارة الدفاع.
