بالاضافة الى كونها قوية ومرنة ودبقة، يمكن الان اضافة خاصية الدفاع الكيميائي الى الخصائص العديدة لخيوط العنكبوت. باحثون من جامعة سنغافورة الوطنية توصلوا الى تحديد مادة كيميائية تسمى 2-pyrrolidinone في خيوط عناكب الشبكة الكروية الذهبية المعروفة بشبكتها الكبيرة القوية التي تصطاد الحشرات الطائرة الكبيرة.
ويقول الباحثون ان العناكب هذه تتعرض لهجوم مجموعات النمل في الوقت الذي تكون فيه ساكنة في شبكتها، اذ تعمل المادة الكيميائية السابقة على ابعاد النمل من خلال رائحتها.
