حذر اطباء من ان اكثر من نصف عمليات نقل الدم تشكل خطرا على صحة المريض بدل ان تفيده، وقالوا ان بعض المرضى تزداد احتمالية تعرضهم للموت بمقدار ستة اضعاف بعد اجرائهم لعمليات جراحية بسبب عمليات نقل الدم.
وتبعا لما جاء في تقرير نشر مؤخرا في المجلة العلمية New Scientist فان هذه النتائج جاءت في ضوء مراجعة لسلامة اجراءات نقل الدم قام بها باحثون من معاهد الصحة الوطنية الاميركية.
وبالرغم من عدم معرفة سبب ارتباط عمليات نقل الدم بارتفاع معدلات الوفاة، فان الاطباء يعتقدون ان الدم المخزون اقل قدرة على نقل الاكسجين الى الاعضاء الحيوية في الجسم وانه يتسبب بتعرض نظام المناعة للتلف.
