أفادت وكالة بحرية بريطانية، فجر الاثنين، باشتعال النيران في سفينة بمضيق هرمز، في الوقت الذي تخوض فيه الولايات المتحدة وإيران نزاعا للسيطرة على هذا الممر المائي الحيوي.

وقالت وكالة عمليات التجارة البحرية في المملكة المتحدة أنها "تلقت تقريرا عن وقوع حادث على بعد 8 أميال بحرية شمال غرب كمزار في عُمان"، مضيفة أنها تلقت أيضا "معلومات من سلطات عسكرية تفيد باشتعال النيران في سفينة".

وأشارت الوكالة إلى أنه لم يتم التحقق بعد من سبب الحريق على متن السفينة.

ويُعد مضيق هرمز أحد أبرز محاور التوتر في النزاع. ومنحت سيطرة إيران على المضيق نفوذا هائلا مما سمح لها فعليا بامتلاك ورقة ضغط.
