وتمكن الفريق من تطوير اختبار دم للكشف المبكر عن سرطان البلعوم الفموي الحليمي باستخدام تقنية تحليل الحمض النووي الورمي المنتشر لفيروس الورم الحليمي البشري (ctHPVDNA).

وأظهرت الدراسة الأولية أن الاختبار كشف الفيروس لدى 22 من 28 مريضا قبل ظهور الأعراض بفترة تتراوح بين 1.3 و10.8 سنوات. وعند توسيع الدراسة لتشمل 306 مشاركا، واستعانة الباحثون بالذكاء الاصطناعي، ارتفعت دقة الاختبار إلى 96%، وتمكّن من رصد آثار الحمض النووي الورمي لأكثر من 10 سنوات قبل التشخيص السريري.

ويأمل الباحثون أن الجمع بين تحليل ctHPVDNA والمؤشرات الحيوية الأخرى، مثل الأجسام المضادة للفيروس، سيتيح اختبار فحص موثوق للكشف المبكر عن هذا النوع من السرطان، ما يقلل بشكل كبير من الوفيات والمضاعفات الصحية الخطيرة.
