قال البروفيسور هانز هاونر إن السمنة المفرطة تؤثر بالسلب على كل عضو بالجسم تقريبا، موضحا أنها تحدث خللا بالأيض (عمليات البناء والهدم في الجسم)، وترفع خطر الإصابة بارتفاع ضغط الدم، وتهدد المفاصل في الركبة والأقدام، كما أنها تنذر بالإصابة بداء السكري.

وأوضح اختصاصي التغذية العلاجية أنه يتم تشخيص الإصابة بالسمنة المفرطة إذا كان مؤشر كتلة الجسم "BMI" أعلى من 30، بينما يتم تشخيص البدانة إذا كان مؤشر كتلة الجسم يقع بين 25 و29.5، حسبما نقلت عنه وكالة الأنباء الألمانية (د ب أ).

ولتجنب مخاطر السمنة المفرطة ينبغي اتباع أسلوب حياة صحي يقوم على التغذية الصحية، أي الإكثار من الخضروات والفواكه، والإقلال من الدهون والسكريات والوجبات السريعة، مع المواظبة على ممارسة الرياضة والأنشطة الحركية.
