قي 111 شخصا على الأقل حتفهم إثر زلزال قوي ضرب غرب كولومبيا في وقت مبكر من ‌صباح اليوم الاثنين، مما أدى إلى انهيار مبان في عدد من المدن وإصابة 87 شخصا وبقاء آخرين محاصرين تحت الأنقاض.

ووقع الزلزال بعد أيام فحسب من أداء أبيلاردو دي إسبريا اليمين رئيسا للبلاد، مما وضع الإدارة الجديدة أمام ⁠أول أزمة كبرى تواجهها، في وقت لا تزال فيه ذكريات أزمة الزلزالين المدمرين اللذين ضربا فنزويلا المجاورة في يونيو حزيران ماثلة في الأذهان.
