أحبط مجلس الشيوخ الأميركي الثلاثاء، بفارق ضئيل، أحدث محاولة قادها الديمقراطيون لوقف الحرب على إيران إلى أن يصدر الكونغرس تفويضا بها، وهي المحاولة التاسعة التي يبادر بها الديمقراطيون منذ أن شنت إسرائيل والولايات المتحدة هجماتهما الجوية على إيران في فبراير شباط.

ورفض مجلس الشيوخ بواقع 48 صوتا مقابل 47 صوتا مؤيدا القرار بموجب قانون صلاحيات الحرب، وذلك في أعقاب اتفاق إطاري أعلنه البيت الأبيض وطهران هذا الأسبوع لوقف جديد لإطلاق النار وإجراء محادثات لإنهاء الصراع.

وجاء التصويت إلى حد كبير على أساس حزبي، إذ صوت أربعة جمهوريين مع معظم الديمقراطيين لصالح القرار، بينما صوت السناتور الديمقراطي جون فيترمان من بنسلفانيا برفضه إلى جانب معظم الجمهوريين.
