لجأ المنتخب الكندي لكرة القدم، المضيف مشاركة مع الولايات المتحدة والمكسيك لمونديال 2026 المقررة انطلاقته الخميس، إلى مهاجم أوستن أف سي الأميركي جايدن نيلسون، كبديل لمارسيلو فلوريس المصاب في نهاية أيار مع فريقه تيجريس المكسيكي.

وشارك نيلسون (23 عاما و15 مباراة دولية) في المعسكر الإعدادي للمنتخب في شارلوت الأميركية نهاية أيار، وفي المباراتين التحضيريتين الأخيرتين ضد أوزبكستان (2-0) حيث سجل الهدف الثاني، وإيرلندا (1-1).

لكنه استبعد عن التشكيلة النهائية المكونة من 26 لاعبا من قبل المدرب الأميركي للمنتخب جيسي مارش.

وسيحل بدلا من فلوريس الذي خضع لجراحة في الخامس من الشهر الحالي بحسب الاتحاد الكندي للعبة، من أجل معالجة قطع في الرباط الصليبي لركبته اليمنى تعرض له في 31 أيار خلال نهائي دوري أبطال الكونكاكاف.

وتلعب كندا في المجموعة الثانية حيث تبدأ مشوارها ضد البوسنة والهرسك في 12 حزيران، قبل أن تواجه قطر وسويسرا.
