دعت جمعية الجمعية الملكية لإنقاذ الأرواح البريطانيين إلى توخي الحذر بعد وفاة تسعة أشخاص غرقا منذ بدء موجة الحر، بينهم سبعة فتيان وفق الشرطة.

وحذرت الجمعية من أن خطر الغرق يتضاعف خمس مرات عندما تتجاوز درجات الحرارة 25 مئوية، مشيرة إلى أن برودة المياه مقارنة بحرارة الجو قد تتسبب بصدمة حرارية مفاجئة.

وسجلت المملكة المتحدة الثلاثاء أعلى درجة حرارة لشهر مايو على الإطلاق، بلغت 35.1 درجة مئوية في لندن.

وأفادت الشرطة بتسجيل حالات الغرق في بحيرات وأنهار وشواطئ عدة منذ الأحد، بينها وفاة أطفال ومراهقين خلال السباحة.

كما توفيت امرأة تبلغ 72 عاماً على أحد شواطئ ويلز، ورجل ستيني خلال محاولته مساعدة أقاربه في البحر بمنطقة كورنوال.
