قال مسؤول أميركي لرويترز إن رسالة بريد إلكتروني داخلية لوزارة الدفاع الأميركية "البنتاغون" تُفصل خيارات أمام الولايات المتحدة لمعاقبة أعضاء في حلف شمال الأطلسي تعتقد أنهم لم يدعموا العمليات الأميركية في الحرب مع إيران، بما في ذلك تعليق عضوية إسبانيا في الحلف ومراجعة موقف الولايات المتحدة بشأن مطالبة بريطانيا بجزر فوكلاند.

وذكر المسؤول أن أحد الخيارات الواردة في الرسالة يتضمن تعليق عضوية الدول "صعبة المراس" من مناصب مهمة أو مرموقة في حلف الأطلسي.
