انتقد بابا الفاتيكان الخميس، الأجانب الذين "ينهبون" ثروات القارة الإفريقية، قائلا، إنهم يسهمون في انتشار الفقر والتخلف.

وأضاف البابا لاون في كلمة ألقاها في الكاميرون في إطار جولته التي تشمل أربع دول إفريقية "لقد حان الوقت، اليوم وليس غدا، الآن وليس في المستقبل، لاستعادة الوحدة من خلال الجمع بين التنوع والثروة في البلاد (الكاميرون) والقارة".
