انتهت المحادثات التمهيدية بين الجانبين اللبناني والإسرائيلي، التي استمرت نحو ساعتين في وزارة الخارجية الأميركية، وفق وكالة الأنباء اللبنانية.

وحضر الاجتماع كل من سفيرة لبنان في واشنطن ندى معوض والسفير الإسرائيلي يحيائيل لايتر والسفير الأميركي في بيروت ميشال عيسى، إضافة إلى وزير الخارجية الأميركي ماركو روبيو.

وكان روبيو دعا، إلى اغتنام "فرصة تاريخية" لتحقيق سلام دائم في لبنان، مع انطلاق أول محادثات مباشرة بين إسرائيل ولبنان منذ عقود.

وقال روبيو لدى استقباله السفيرين الإسرائيلي واللبناني في وزارة الخارجية "إنها فرصة تاريخية. ندرك أننا نواجه عقودا من التاريخ والتعقيدات التي أوصلتنا إلى هذه اللحظة الفريدة وإلى الإمكانات المتاحة أمامنا".

وأضاف "يتعلق الأمر بإنهاء عقود من نفوذ حزب الله في هذه المنطقة" مشيرا إلى أن محادثات الثلاثاء تطلق "مسارا سيستغرق وقتا".
