أعلن مجلس خبراء القيادة في إيران الأحد انتخاب مجتبى خامنئي، مرشدا أعلى جديدا للجمهورية الإسلامية، خلفا لوالده آية الله علي الذي اغتيل في بداية الهجوم الأميركي الإسرائيلي على طهران في 28 شباط/فبراير.

وأعلن المجلس المؤلف من 88 عضوا في بيان "تمّ في الجلسة الاستثنائية اليوم، وبناءً على التصويت الحاسم لممثلي مجلس خبراء القيادة المحترمين، تعيين سماحة آية الله السيّد مجتبى الحسيني الخامنئي... القائد الثالث" للجمهورية الإسلامية منذ إنشائها عام 1979.
