تتمتع البلدة القديمة من مدينة القدس بجمال طبيعي قل نظيره، ويضفي فصل الشتاء جمالا خاصا على مبانيها من منازل وأسواق بنيت بحجارة طبيعية.

ومن أبرز معالم القدس القديمة أسواقها ومنازلها، التي تمثل جزءا أصيلا من هويتها، وتمتاز ببهاء قبابها وبديع مناظرها.

وتبلغ مساحة البلدة القديمة نحو 900 دونم (الدونم ألف متر)، أي ما نسبته 0.71% من المساحة الكلية للمدينة بشقيها الغربي المحتل عام 1948، والشرقي المحتل عام 1967.

أدرجت منظمة اليونسكو عام 1981 القدس القديمة وأسوارها إلى قائمة التراث العالمي بناء على طلب المملكة الأردنية الهاشمية، ثم أُدرجت عام 1982 إلى قائمة التراث المهدد نظرا للتهديدات الجدية على مستوى صون الموقع والوضع السياسي.
