طالبت إيران الاثنين، بإطلاق سراح الرئيس نيكولاس مادورو الذي اعتقلته قوة أميركية في كراكاس ونقلته إلى نيويورك لمحاكمته، في عملية عسكرية كبيرة ومفاجئة.

وقال المتحدث باسم وزارة الخارجية الإيرانية إسماعيل بقائي في مؤتمر صحافي أسبوعي في طهران "لقد اختُطف رئيس دولة، وهذا أمر غير قانوني ولا يدعو إلى الفخر بأي حال من الأحوال. يجب الإفراج عن رئيس فنزويلا".
