وصل البابا لاوون الرابع عشر، الأحد إلى بيروت، في زيارة تستمر 48 ساعة، يحمل خلالها رسالة سلام إلى اللبنانيين الذين عصفت بهم أزمات متلاحقة خلال السنوات الأخيرة.

ومن المقرر استقبال البابا من المطار، حيث يقام له استقبال رسمي بحضور المسؤولين يتقدمهم رئيس الجمهورية جوزاف عون، إلى القصر الرئاسي حيث سيلقي كلمة أمام الحاضرين من مسؤولين ودبلوماسيين.

واختتم البابا الأحد زيارة استمرت أربعة أيام إلى تركيا حيث خصّته الرعية المسيحية الصغيرة باستقبال حار.

وفي أول زيارة خارجية له منذ انتخابه على رأس الكنيسة الكاثوليكية البالغ عدد أتباعها 1,4 مليار نسمة حول العالم، التقى لاوون الرابع عشر الرئيس رجب طيب إردوغان ثم توجّه إلى إزنيق لإحياء ذكرى مرور 1700 عام على انعقاد مجمع نيقية المسكوني الأول الذي شكّل محطة تأسيسية للمسيحية.
