حذر الرئيس الأمريكي دونالد ترامب، الأربعاء، من أن مدينة نيويورك "تنتظرها أشياء مروعة" عقب فوز الديمقراطي الاشتراكي زهران ممداني في انتخابات رئاسة بلدية المدينة، مشيرًا إلى أن السكان "يغادرون لأنهم لا يريدون العيش تحت نظام شيوعي"، على حد تعبيره.

وقال ترامب، خلال كلمته في المنتدى الأمريكي للأعمال: "أنتم ترون ما يحدث في نيويورك، إنه أمر مروّع... وآمل ألا يحدث ذلك، لكنكم ستشهدونه قريبًا".

وكانت الولايات المتحدة قد شهدت يوم الثلاثاء انتخابات محلية شملت مناصب حكام ولايات نيوجيرسي وفيرجينيا، إضافة إلى رئاسة بلدية نيويورك، التي فاز بها ممداني ليصبح أول مسلم وأصغر من يتولى هذا المنصب في تاريخ المدينة الحديث.
