توفي نائب الرئيس الأميركي السابق ديك تشيني عن 84 عاما، بعد حياة سياسية تركت بصماتها على عدد من الأحداث الكبرى.
ونقلت وسائل إعلام أميركية عن عائلة ديك تشيني الثلاثاء أنه توفي أمس الاثنين بسبب مضاعفات نتجت عن إصابته بالتهاب رئوي، إضافة إلى مشاكل في القلب.
وكان تشيني نائب الرئيس 46 للولايات المتحدة خلال ولايتي الرئيس الجمهوري جورج دبليو بوش بين 2001 و2009، وهي مرحلة طبعتها أحداث كبرى كغزو العراق، مثل غزو أفغانتسان و"الحرب على الإرهاب".
وقال جورج بوش في بيان الثلاثاء إن تشيني كان "من بين أفضل من خدموا الولايات المتحدة من أبناء جيله"، مضيفا "كان وطنيا أثبت نزاهته وذكاءه وجديّته في كل المناصب التي شغلها".
وولد ديك تشيني في لينكولن في ولاية نبراسكا في 30 كانون الثاني 1941، ودرس في جامعة ييل المرموقة، لكنه لم يتمّ دراسته فيها، بل انتقل إلى جامعة أخرى هي جامعة ويومينغ. وأمضى عشر سنوات عضوا في الكونغرس قبل أن يعينه جورج بوش وزيرا للدفاع عام 1989.
