تسبب الإعصار ميليسا في جامايكا بدمار "على مستويات غير مسبوقة"، بحسب ما أفاد مسؤول في الأمم المتحدة الأربعاء.

وقال دينيس زولو، منسق المنظمة الدولية في دول عدة في الكاريبي، في اتصال عبر الفيديو من كينغستون "ما نعرفه الى الآن هو حصول دمار هائل، غير مسبوق، على مستوى البنى التحتية والممتلكات، الطرق، شبكات الاتصالات والطاقة". وأشار الى أن سكانا يقيمون "في ملاجئ في مختلف أنحاء البلاد، وحاليا تشير تقديراتنا الأولية الى أن البلد تعرّض لأضرار على مستويات غير مسبوقة".
