أقر مجلس الشيوخ في أوروغواي قانونا يشرع القتل الرحيم، لتصبح إحدى الدول القليلة التي تتيح قانونيا للمصابين بأمراض خطيرة الحصول على مساعدة لإنهاء حياتهم.

وبذلك تصبح أوروغواي أول دولة في أمريكا اللاتينية ذات الغالبية الكاثوليكية التي تسمح بالقتل الرحيم عبر تشريع قانوني، في حين تم إلغاء تجريمه في كولومبيا والإكوادور بموجب قرارات صادرة عن المحكمة العليا في البلدين.

وفي تشيلي، أعاد الرئيس غابرييل بوريتش مؤخرا إحياء الجهود لدفع مشروع قانون القتل الرحيم الذي ظل مجمدا طويلا في مجلس الشيوخ، بينما تشهد المنطقة منذ سنوات نقاشات محتدمة وحراكا واسعا حول هذه القضية.

وجاء إقرار القانون بعد مسار متعثر استمر خمس سنوات، وتمت الموافقة عليه نهائيا أمس الأربعاء بأغلبية 20 صوتا من أصل 31 عضوا في مجلس الشيوخ.
