بدأ الناخبون في الكاميرون البالغ عددهم نحو 8 ملايين ناخب اليوم الأحد، التوافد على مكاتب الاقتراع لاختيار رئيس جديد للبلاد في انتخابات تجرى من جولة واحدة.

وذكرت الهيئة الوطنية للانتخابات في الكاميرون "اليكام"، حسبما أورد "راديو فرنسا الدولي"، أنه تم فتح حوالي 31 ألف مركز اقتراع عند الثامنة صباحا على أن تغلق أبوابها عند السادسة مساء.

ويخوض الرئيس المنتهية ولايته بول بيا، هذه الانتخابات ساعيا إلى الفوز بولاية ثامنة، وسط منافسة من عدد من الشخصيات السياسية البارزة، حيث بلغ عدد المرشحين الرسميين 12 مرشحا، إلا أن اثنين منهم انسحبوا قبل موعد الاقتراع.
