صوّت مجلس الشيوخ الأميركي الثلاثاء ضدّ مشروع قرار طرحته الأغلبية الجمهورية لتمديد سقف التمويل الفدرالي مؤقتا وبالتالي تجنّب إغلاق عدد من الإدارات التابعة للحكومة الفدرالية اعتبارا من منتصف الليل (04,00 ت غ الأربعاء).

وكان مشروع القرار يحتاج إلى أغلبية 60 صوتا لاعتماده، لكنّ حلفاء الرئيس دونالد ترامب الجمهوريون فشلوا في الحصول على الأصوات القليلة اللازمة من المعسكر الديموقراطي وتمديد تمويل الحكومة لما بعد يوم الثلاثاء الذي يمثّل نهاية السنة المالية، في حدث غير مسبوق في الولايات المتّحدة منذ ستّ سنوات.
