كشفت صحيفة "الفايننشال تايمز" البريطانية، أن مسؤولين في الاتحاد الأوروبي يعكفون على تسريع خطط إصدار اليورو الرقمي، وذلك عقب إقرار الولايات المتحدة قانوناً جديداً ينظم سوق العملات المستقرة (Stablecoins) المقدر بنحو 288 مليار دولار والمهيمن عليه من قبل الدولار.

وأشارت الصحيفة إلى أن تمرير القانون الأميركي المعروف بـ"قانون جينيوس" دفع المسؤولين الأوروبيين إلى إعادة التفكير في مسار المشروع، مع بحث إمكانية تشغيل العملة الرقمية على منصة عامة مثل إيثريوم أو سولانا بدلاً من الشبكات الخاصة التي كانت مطروحة سابقاً، في ظل مخاوف تتعلق بالخصوصية.

ويرى خبراء أن تسارع الخطوة الأوروبية يهدف إلى حماية مكانة اليورو وتعزيز استقلالية النظام المالي الأوروبي، في وقت تتصاعد فيه المخاوف من اتساع الاعتماد العالمي على أنظمة دفع أجنبية مدعومة بالدولار.
