توفي 13 شخصا في الكويت منذ السبت، من جراء تسمّم كحولي ناجم عن تناول مشروبات ملوثة بمادة الميثانول، فيما يتلقى العشرات رعاية طبية عاجلة، وفق ما أعلنت الأربعاء وزارة الصحة.

وجاء في بيان للوزارة أن "المستشفيات تعاملت منذ يوم السبت الماضي مع 63 حالة تسمم كحولي ناتج عن تناول مشروبات ملوثة بمادة الميثانول".

وتحظر السلطات الكويتية استيراد الكحول منذ عام 1964، وقد تم تجريم استهلاكه في ثمانينيات القرن الماضي.

ولفتت الوزارة في بيانها إلى تفاوت خطورة الحالات إذ "تطلبت 31 حالة استخدام أجهزة التنفس الصناعي، فيما استدعت 51 حالة جلسات غسيل كلوي عاجلة، كما سجلت 21 حالة إصابة بعمى دائم أو تأثر البصر".
