ابتكر علماء صينيون نحلا آليا عبر ربط جهاز تحكم دماغي بدقة 74 ميغابكسل بنحل حقيقي، ما يسمح له بالتحكم عن بُعد في فصوصه البصرية باستخدام نبضات كهربائية.

,يستجيب النحل لأوامر الطيران يسارا ويمينا وأماما وخلفا بدقة تصل إلى 90 بالمئة. ويتضمن هذا الجهاز الصغير جهاز استقبال للأشعة تحت الحمراء ودوائر دقيقة مرنة أرق من أجنحة الحشرات.

ويمكن لهذه النحلات الطيران لمسافة تصل إلى 5 كيلومترات وحمل حمولة تصل إلى 80 بالمئة من وزنها، ما يجعلها مثالية لمهام الاستطلاع والمراقبة والبحث والإنقاذ
