استخدمت الولايات المتحدة في مجلس الأمن الدولي الأربعاء حقّ النقض (الفيتو) ضدّ مشروع قرارٍ يدعو لوقف إطلاق النار في غزة وإتاحة وصول المساعدات الإنسانيٍة بدون قيود إلى القطاع المحاصر، في خطوة برّرتها واشنطن بأنّ النصّ يُقوّض الجهود الدبلوماسية الجارية لحلّ النزاع.

وقالت المبعوثة الأميركية لدى الأمم المتحدة دوروثي شيا قبيل التصويت إنّ "من شأن هذا القرار أن يُقوّض الجهود الدبلوماسية الرامية للتوصّل إلى وقف إطلاق نار يعكس الواقع على الأرض ويُشجّع حماس. كذلك فإنّ هذا القرار يرسي مساواة زائفة بين إسرائيل وحماس".
