أعلن الفاتيكان أن الكاردينال الاميركي روبرت فرنسيس بريفوست أصبح الخميس أول بابا يتحدر من الولايات المتحدة وقد اتخذ له اسم ليون الرابع عشر.

والبابا الجديد مولود في شيكاغو، وكان مساعدا مقربا من البابا الراحل فرنسيس. ويعرف في أوساط حكومة الفاتيكان بانه شخصية معتدلة قادرة على التوفيق بين وجهات النظر المتباينة.

والكاردينال بريفوست هو أول بابا أميركي في تاريخ الكنيسة الكاثوليكية، واختار البابا الجديد اسم ليون الرابع عشر (الفاتيكان)

وتصاعد دخان أبيض من مدخنة كنيسة سيستينا في الفاتيكان، مساء اليوم الخميس، في إشارة الى نجاح المجمع الانتخابي باختيار بابا جديد بعد 4 جولات فقط من التصويت، جرت يومي الأربعاء والخميس.

وعاود الكرادلة المجتمعين خلف أبواب مغلقة وفي عزلة تامة عن العالم الخارجي، إجراء 4 جولات من التصويت بعد ظهر الخميس، وفقًا لشبكة "يورونيوز" الأوروبية.

وبعد أكثر من أسبوعين على رحيل البابا فرنسيس، التأم الكرادلة الناخبون البالغ عددهم 133، والقادمون من 70 بلدًا، وهو عدد قياسي للبلدان الممثَّلة في هذا المجمع الانتخابي (المعروف بـ"كونكلاف") المضبوط الإيقاع بدقّة والذي تتابعه وسائل إعلام العالم أجمع لنقله إلى الكاثوليك المقدّر عددهم بنحو 1,4 مليار نسمة.
